Josefstadt Apartment — a home for the next chapter of life.

Full renovation of a 230 sqm pre-war apartment in Vienna's 8th district: new floors, reopened room sequences, historic details preserved — and consistently tailored to one person. A human-centered living design project by Richard Atelier.

Starting point

A turn-of-the-century building — divided by its own history.

High ceilings, but a floor plan that had grown over decades: partition walls added during an earlier subdivision into smaller units, uneven floors, doors and stucco badly worn. The potential of the 230 square metres stayed hidden behind too many walls.

Life concept

Not: how many rooms does it need? But: what does the next everyday look like?

The client, an entrepreneur in his mid-fifties, is moving back into the city after years in the countryside — closer to the office, to culture, to short distances. Instead of a classic showcase floor plan, the result is an apartment that supports focused work, spontaneous guests, and quiet evenings alike: a home that thinks along with him, not just one that impresses.

Spatial feeling

Old and new in the same breath.

Historic stucco on the ceiling, clean contemporary furnishing underneath — not a contrast, but a dialogue. Continuous oak flooring ties the newly reopened room sequence together, while restored double doors keep the rhythm of the original apartment audible. Light now reaches deep into rooms that partition walls used to cut off.
